A Traditional Armenian American Cultural Wedding

This was my first time covering a traditional Armenian wedding. I’d say 70% of the day was dedicated to dancing, 10% dedicated to getting married and 20% dedicated to premium alcohol consumption along with their closest 300 family members, relatives and friends.

The day started at Armens’ home where 3 musicians played the clarinet, drum and accordion and welcomed his immediate family. Armen’s immediate family (parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts) then went over to Adriana’s house with beautiful floral gift baskets containing the veil, her shoes, chocolates, Hennessy, perfume and more flowers.

At Adriana’s house, the outside was welcoming with fabric decor. There were two tables inside, one with food and desserts and the other table with the gifts. As Armen’s family begin entering Adriana’s home, they were dancing and celebrating the arrival of Armen’s family. Once they entered the house, Adriana made her appearance into the living room in a silver dress. The room was now filled with immediate family members from both sides. After another dance, Adriana went to go change into her wedding dress with her bridesmaids. Her brother put money in her shoe for good luck and placed Adriana’s shoes on her feet. Before Adriana makes her debut in her gorgeous wedding dress, Armen was in the living room.

Armen was being blessed by his parents with a dance. Each parent put a ribbon on him, one was red and one was green. They placed it on him in a way where the ribbons crossed his chest. Then it was time to see his to-be wife in her dress for the first time. After seeing each other, it was time to hop into the limo and head to the ceremony location: Japanese Tea house at Brand Park in Glendale, California. However, there was one more obstacle. In Armenian weddings, it is traditional for the brother of the Bride to stop Armen from taking his sister away. Armen at this point has to offer money to him until he allows him to take his sister away.

Their ceremony was also a bit different from what I’ve seen before. The priest had them bump heads for 80% of the time, then drink 1/3 cup of wine each from a fresh bottle with the best man. Before I knew it, the ceremony was done. Following the ceremony, they went to a historical house in Pasadena called the Maxwell House for a few more vintage looking photos.

Afterward, they made their first public appearance as husband and wife at the Royal Palace in Glendale, which is right across the street from the Americana shopping mall. The banquet hall at the Royal Palace was absolutely gorgeous.

The high ceilings, pictures on the wall, huge chandeliers, detailed Victorian style molding molding, it all added to the look of the venue. Not to mention the elaborate centerpieces and the variety of appetizers on the 30 tables. They made their entrance with the same 3 musicians and went straight into a family dance again! Interesting… Afterward, they ate their dinner and performed their first dance over a cloud of smoke. But that wasn’t it, they went on to perform a grease type dance for their guests.

Armenian weddings are longgggg!!!! 15 hours went by so quickly. Oh yea, coffee is a big thing in the Armenian culture. It was served at each of their parents’ homes and at the reception. I’m not talking about just cups of coffee, but straight shots of expresso. I had a great time photographing Adriana and Armen’s big wedding day.

    A Simple American Wedding Reception

Two days before their reception, they had gotten married at the Beverly Hills City Hall, keeping everything simple and sweet. They celebrated their marriage with family and friends in Southern California and held their wedding reception at Bistro 45 in Pasadena, California. It was an intimate event with only their closest 60 family members, relatives and friends.

Kelly and Ronnie got married on the beautiful pacific coast in Laguna Beach, California. It was a short, sweet and simple wedding. Ronnie had mentioned he liked country music. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a first dance with country music. Check out the video I made for them!

Jill and George are such a lovely couple that I just can’t post enough of their photos online. She’s beautiful, he’s handsome they’re playful and it’s obvious that they are truly in love. The images you are about to see seriously look like they came right out of a movie. They were lucky enough to be able to use the backyard of a house with an amazing garden. It was a mexican themed wedding event with mexican musicians (guitarists and accordion players in uniform) and mexican food (super chicken and beef tacos, enchiladas, rice and beans).

Check out this piece of Mexican art! You can’t get any more authentic Mexican than this. I love how there’s a mini donkey pinata.

    Mexican Themed Wedding Photography

Learning the accordion would been a lot more fun, but I got stuck with learning the piano. It’s obviously not nearly as portable as an accordion.

It’s those moments before the bride and groom are about to kiss that give me butterflies in my stomach, but I have to stay focused and make sure can still take a clear photo. My hands were probably sweating profusely as I clenched onto my camera as hard as I could to keep my camera steady.

After scrounging through his pocket for a minute to find the ring, he finally found it, phew!

I absolutely love this shot of Jill and George as they gaze into each others’ eyes a second before they enjoy their first kiss as husband and wife.

I caught this photo of George looking at Mom and Jill making her speech while the sun was setting. I believe they call this the Magic Hour in photography.

Another amazing shot of Jill and George. You can truly see how happy they are, they’ll be able to relive this moment forever.

    Black and White Wedding Photography

I forget how many poems George wrote for Jill, but WOW, it was such a sweet poem. Everyone was literally watery eyed at this moment. George is also a phenomenal speaker, which made this poem even more touching.

Family hugs cant get better than this. The gentleman on the lower right side is actually in a wheelchair, so I had them give each other a great big hug for this shot. You can almost hear the laughter, feel the warmth and the happiness they must be feeling at this moment.

I’d say this was a perfect evening for Jill and George as they joined together as husband and wife. They wanted a simple backyard wedding and invited their closest family and friends to join them on their special day. I had a fabulous time photographing them and wish the best for their future.

Valentine’s Day is coming up this weekend and to stay within budget, you can quickly make a free 30-second short video through a website called Animoto.com. All you have to do is upload your photos, add some text (optional), and choose your music. Then just send it to your friend or loved one. Grab the photos from facebook or your personal digital album of photos. Here’s an example of a photography album that I created with the photos in my database. However, I did use an all-access account so that I could create longer videos.

This was a very interesting sheet was displayed at one of the Chinese weddings that I was at. It looks like this was translated directly from Chinese, so don’t expect proper English. I also do not know the author here, so I can’t provide any recognition to the write, but here it is verbatim.

    Banquet Menu

Chinese food has special symbolism: mostly wishes of happiness, longevity, or fertility. Below are descriptions for some of the dishes that will be served tonight. Thanks for joining us and enjoy!

    1. Roasted Suckling Pig with Jelly Fish Platter
A wedding banquet starts with appetizers such as”dragon-phoenix” plates or cold plates that consist of various sliced meats and jellyfish. The dish represents prosperity with sucking pig representing gold and the jellyfish representing silver.

    2. Pan Fried Whole Scallops
    3. Stir-Fried Giant Shellfish and Shrimp
    4. Fried Rice Cake with Seafood Soup
    5. French Style Beef
    6. Sauteed Sea Cucumber with Abalone and Mushroom
Serving sea cucumber with vegetables is a sign of selflessness because “sea cucumber” sounds like “good heart” and this dish wishes the couple to think in a similar way – to avoid conflict.

    7. Prince Seafood Lobster
    8. House Special Peking Duck
Red is the color for happiness, so serving Peking duck and lobster would signify joy and celebration. Also, serving the dish whole, i.e. with the head and legs would symbolize completeness.

    9. Steamed Whole Fish
Serving fish would hope that the couple will experience a life together with abundance because “fish” sounds like “plentiful” in Chinese.

    10. Yang Zhou Fried Rice
Rice is a basic staple in Chinese cuisine and it represents the many meals the couple will eat together in the future.

    11. Mango Pudding
    12. Sweet Forever Dessert Soup
Serving dessert wishes the newlyweds a sweet life. The hot sweet soup should contain lotus seeds (lian zi) and a bark-like vegetable (bak hop) to wish the newlyweds a hundred years of togetherness

I photographed their ceremony and reception at The Grand Events Center in Long Beach, CA.
I have the best job in the world and it’s people like Zoila and Jason who inspire me. They’re so happy together and that’s what creates the most beautiful weddings. Here’s a glimpse of them at the beach playing. I love capturing couples when they’re happily frolicking around as if I weren’t around.

For Elise and Robert, it was celebration of their love with family and friends. It was different to see such different personalities join together. Elise has an infinite amount of energy while Robert is a laid back kind of guy. It kind of reminds me of my relationship with my girlfriend. They were a really fun couple to work with and I wish the best for their future.

Here some of my favorite shots of the day…

We did an awesome urban photoshoot around Costa Mesa with a couple who were great models right before their wedding. What I love about being a wedding photographer is simply, documenting love. Sure, I love all the details and the fashion and the big parties, but it’s the love and the passion each couple shares that I want them to remember from their special day. It was a perfect day and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful setting sun for their photos.
